Minnesota History: Building A Legacy

The U.S. Dakota War of 1862

“The Battle of Birch Coulee,” Lithograph by Paul G. Biersach, 1912.‎2012 marks 150 years since the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, a tragic time in Minnesota's history. The war, its causes and its aftermath had a profound impact in shaping Minnesota.

Throughout 2012, we will introduce a wide range of initiatives, funded in part by the Legacy Amendment, to encourage discussion and reflection about the war. This website shares historical background, a timeline of events, public programs, books, links to photos, documents and artifacts relating to the war, and resources for researching family history.

We encourage you to learn more this important time in our history by exploring the website, coming to the exhibit opening June 30 at the Mi. visiting our sites, going to community events and joining the conversation at www.usdakotawar.org.

This site is updated regularly with descriptions and data related to Legacy projects funded through the Minnesota Historical Society by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACHF).
Further information about the use and impact of all Legacy Funds can be found on the Minnesota Legislative Coordinating Commission's Minnesota's Legacy site.
