What Was Transitions: University Avenue?

Transitions was a Legacy-funded collaborative project between the Minnesota Historical Society and Gordon Parks High School in St. Paul, Minnesota.

From the site:

The students of Gordon Parks High School, in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society, are documenting stages of transition along University Avenue through the stories of elders, business owners, and residents affected by the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (CCLRT) project.

The rich legacy of our namesake — the late artist Gordon Parks — guides our footsteps, encouraging us to learn more about the history of this neighborhood so we can tell the stories of the CCLRT project that might not otherwise be told, and share the images that might not otherwise be seen.

Transitions is a multi-year project, produced entirely by students, who began by documenting the controversial stage of pre-construction along the avenue. They went on to create documentaries on area residents during construction, and are continuing their work now that the CCLRT project is complete.

Our goals are to preserve important history, increase awareness of this community in transition, and highlight the work of the talented students of Gordon Parks High School.
